Receipts to Xero
Bookkeeping admin is the job nobody does until quarter end. This bot watches a Slack channel, reads each receipt with Claude's vision, picks the account code from your own conventions and history, and creates the bill in Xero through the official API. The photo you took in the car park is a reconciled bill before you get home.

The brief
Photograph it and forget it.
Receipts pile up. Xero's own capture is another app and another login. We already live in Slack, so the channel became the inbox, and the bot became the bookkeeper's assistant.
- Watches the receipts channel, acknowledges each photo or PDF with an emoji state machine, and de-duplicates by content hash.
- Vision extraction of merchant, date, total, VAT and a summary, from a phone photo.
- A self-teaching rules engine: an unknown merchant triggers a threaded question with a ranked top three account codes; your answer becomes a permanent rule.
- Recommendations blend the line items, your conventions, historical Xero usage and UK corporation tax deductibility rules.
- Variable merchants split across up to four account codes, always summing to the receipt total; foreign currency receipts ask for the GBP amount that actually hit the card.
- Creates the contact if needed, raises an authorised bill and attaches the original image, then reports back in the same thread.

Small bot, real accounting API.
Python, the Slack API, Claude's vision model, the Xero accounting API with OAuth 2 and offline refresh, and a YAML rules file. Runs as a service on our always-on Ubuntu box with a deploy script that never overwrites live tokens, rules or data.
