Before you replace that laptop, check what is actually slow.
Most 'too slow' laptops are a mechanical hard drive and not enough RAM. Two cheap parts usually beat a new machine.
The problem
Old is rarely the actual fault
It takes three minutes to boot, the fan sounds like it is trying to leave, and opening a browser tab feels like a negotiation. Everyone tells you it is old and you need a new one.
- The overwhelming cause of a slow older laptop is a spinning mechanical hard drive. They are roughly a hundred times slower than an SSD at the small random reads an operating system does constantly. Swapping it is the single biggest speed change you can buy.
- The second cause is running out of RAM. When memory fills, the system starts shuffling data onto that already-slow disk, which is why everything grinds at once rather than one app being slow.
- The third is heat. Years of dust in the fan means the processor overheats and deliberately slows itself down to survive. A can of compressed air is a legitimate performance upgrade.
- Processors, by contrast, have not improved as dramatically as people assume for everyday work. A decade-old i5 with an SSD and enough RAM handles email, documents and browsing perfectly well.
The fix
How to tell which one it is
Cheapest and most effective first. A surprising amount of this costs nothing at all, which is not what most sites selling you things will tell you.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), Performance tab. Work normally for a bit, then look.
- Disk pinned at 100% while everything crawls: you have a mechanical drive. Buy an SSD. This is the most common answer by a wide margin.
- Memory above about 80% constantly: add RAM. Check what your model takes and whether the slots are accessible, since some ultrabooks solder it on.
- CPU at 100% with the fan roaring and the laptop hot: clean the vents first, and check what is actually using the CPU before spending anything.
- Everything looks idle and it is still slow: that is usually software. Too many startup programs, or an antivirus fighting itself.
- Genuinely time to replace it if: it cannot run a supported version of Windows, the RAM is soldered at 4GB, or the repair costs more than half a replacement.
Refurbished
Buy the parts new, buy the laptop refurbished
Buying used is often the best value in tech, and occasionally a terrible idea. Which one it is depends entirely on the category.
Amazon Resale store- SSDs and RAM should be bought new. They are cheap, and used storage carries wear you cannot see.
- Whole laptops are the opposite. Business-grade refurbished machines (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook) are built to a far higher standard than consumer laptops at the same price, come off corporate leases in bulk, and usually have accessible RAM and drive bays.
- Amazon's Resale and Renewed stock is worth checking for laptops specifically, since electronics is where those programmes genuinely have depth.

How to actually find refurbished stock.
Worth knowing, because it is not obvious and we checked: you cannot filter an Amazon search to refurbished items from a link. We tried every documented approach and each one quietly returned ordinary new products instead.
