The one that keeps working in a power cut, and the reason it beats a better 4G router for outages and caravans.
Why we use it
What this is actually for.
We keep one of these in the van and hand them to clients during outages. It is not fast and it is not new, and neither of those things matters for what it is for. The point is that it makes its own internet from a SIM and runs off a battery, which is exactly what you need on the day nothing else works.
- Battery powered, so it keeps going in a power cut when your fibre router is dead even though the line outside is fine.
- Charges over USB, so a 12V socket or a power bank runs it. No hook-up and no inverter needed in a caravan.
- The screen shows signal strength, which is genuinely useful when you are working out where to stand or where to park.
- Shares one SIM with up to ten devices, so the whole household or van gets back online, not just you.
The honest bit
Where it falls short.
Every product on this site gets this section. If we cannot think of anything to put here, we have not used the thing properly.
- Cat4 caps out around 150Mbps, and in practice local 4G coverage limits you long before the hardware does.
- Around 8 hours of battery. Fine for an outage, not a full off-grid week without recharging.
- It is a stopgap, not a second broadband line. Do not buy it expecting to replace fixed broadband.
- Roaming terms live with the SIM, not the device, so it does nothing to solve EU roaming on its own.
Fit
Who should and should not buy this.
Most bad tech purchases are not bad products. They are good products bought for the wrong job.
- Right for: home workers who cannot afford to lose a day to an outage.
- Right for: caravans, motorhomes and site work, where 12V power is the deciding factor.
- Right for: a gap between house moves.
- Wrong for: a permanent connection for a busy office. Buy a mains 4G router with external aerial ports.
