Whole-home mesh Wi-Fi review
TP-Link Deco X55 review
The mesh we install most often in ordinary UK homes, and the dual-band caveat nobody selling it will mention.
Why we use it
What this is actually for.
The Deco X55 is the mesh we reach for by default when a normal UK house has a dead spot upstairs. It is not the fastest thing TP-Link sells and it is not trying to be. It is the one that goes in quickly, behaves itself afterwards, and does not cost more than the problem is worth.
- Setup genuinely is about ten minutes from the app, including adopting all three nodes.
- Roaming between nodes is seamless in practice. Video calls survive walking through the house, which is the whole point.
- Three units covers most UK semis and terraces comfortably.
- Each node has spare gigabit ports, so you can wire the backhaul later without buying anything else.
- Firmware updates actually arrive, which is not a given at this price.
The honest bit
Where it falls short.
Every product on this site gets this section. If we cannot think of anything to put here, we have not used the thing properly.
- It is dual-band, not tri-band. There is no dedicated radio for node-to-node traffic, so every wireless hop costs throughput.
- In a stone-built or very long house you will feel that, and a tri-band kit or wired access points would be the better answer.
- The app wants an account and nudges you toward a subscription for extras you almost certainly do not need.
Fit
Who should and should not buy this.
Most bad tech purchases are not bad products. They are good products bought for the wrong job.
- Right for: an average semi or terrace with one or two weak rooms.
- Right for: anyone who can run a single Ethernet cable to one node.
- Wrong for: thick stone walls, or a house long enough to need three wireless hops.
- Wrong for: chasing headline speed. On a sub-gigabit line you will not notice the difference against pricier kit.
