Why we use it
What this is actually for.
This is the part we reach for when someone insists their Wi-Fi is broken but only one machine is actually struggling. It is not a coverage fix and it will not help the rest of the house. What it does is replace a tired internal aerial buried in a laptop hinge or a metal desktop case.
- Two high-gain aerials in place of whatever is buried inside the machine, which is where the gain actually comes from.
- Genuinely plug-and-play on current Windows and macOS. No driver hunting on modern builds.
- Costs a fraction of any network upgrade, so it is worth trying first when only one device is affected.
- Small enough to live in a laptop bag as a spare.
The honest bit
Where it falls short.
Every product on this site gets this section. If we cannot think of anything to put here, we have not used the thing properly.
- Plug it into USB 2 and it is throttled well below what it can do. This is far and away the most common reason people think it is faulty.
- It sticks out, so on a laptop it is easy to catch on things.
- Does nothing whatsoever for other devices. If the whole house is slow, this is the wrong purchase.
Fit
Who should and should not buy this.
Most bad tech purchases are not bad products. They are good products bought for the wrong job.
- Right for: one old laptop or desktop that is slower than everything else in the same room.
- Right for: a desktop whose aerial sits inside a metal case.
- Wrong for: whole-house coverage problems. Buy mesh or cable instead.
- Wrong for: a machine with a free PCIe slot, where an internal card with external aerials is tidier.
